I ain’t afraid of no ghosts
October coming to a close coincides with Halloween and there is a perpetual debate about whether and how Catholics can celebrate this holiday. It always reminds me of Ghostbusters from the 1980’s and there is a lot of fascination with these things in our culture.
As Catholics, we hold on firmly to the truth that we are made for more and that death is a passage to eternal life. How are we living? Are we preparing ourselves for an eternity lived in the presence of God?
In the news:
Education is on Pope Leo XIV’s mind this week. On Tuesday, he signed the Apostolic Letter “Drawing New Maps of Hope” on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Conciliar Declaration “Gravissimum educationis.” Thursday and Friday, he received groups from the Jubilee of the World of Education.
What I have been reading: I got pretty excited about the Pope’s new Apostolic Letter and have written a few analysis pieces. Bridging Gaps: Education, Service, and the Gospel Today. Shaping Minds, Forming Hearts. Where Faith, Reason, and the Heart Meet.
Best Podcast of the Week: Matt Fradd sat down with Jason and Crystallina Evert on Pints with Aquinas. This raw conversation about marriage opens the curtain to some of the mysteries of trying to live a Christian marriage in a very un-Christian world.
My thoughts on the Sunday Gospel: I like praying in cemeteries. All Souls’ Day can be a somber experience, but we have to catch the beauty of Christ’s message, which is one of eternal life.

Catechesis Highlight: I wrote down some ideas about the history of Humanae Vitae and the effects that artificial contraception has had on our society. It was truly A Revolution of Truth.
